Get out and about to inspire us, Ma’am

I SINCERELY hope the Queen’s decision not to attend the State Opening of Parliament was not out of embarrassment at being seen using a wheelchair or a walking aid. Her determination to carry on with her duties at the age of 96 admirably challenges a widespread view that older people have little to offer in the workplace. She could provide the same challenge to the negative views about people using wheelchairs or walking aids. Too many people are isolated and lonely because they do not want to be seen as ‘old’, ‘doddery’ or ‘vulnerable’. Seeing the Queen accepting assistance could go a long way to challenging negative and damaging stereotypes.

WALKING along the shore of Lake Garda in Italy, my wife and I were passed by a smartly dressed man driving a beautifully designed compact mobility scooter. As he approached a BMW Series 5 estate, the boot opened and a ramp dropped down. He drove up it into the driving position, the ramp receded, the boot closed and he drove off. What a wonderful example of how technology can help us to continue to live an independent life. Our magnificent Queen has all her marbles, but is having trouble with her pins. I know how she feels as I am a few years younger. As a proud Metropolitan Vickerstrained engineer of 50 years standing, I am sure the mobility industry could design a suitably embellished machine for the Queen that will not only look the part, but give her the freedom of movement she desires. This would prove that British industrial design is still number one in style and class. There is no shame in using mobility aids — the Queen’s crofter’s walking stick is a fine example. If our monarch was seen using a mobility scooter it could motivate councils to provide the required access for thousands of users around the country.
