CALLING old comrades from the Royal Navy in the 1950s. John Hedger, from Dunsfold in Surrey, was attached to the electrical department

of HMS Newcastle. ‘We were part of the Commonwealth and U.S. forces based at Kure in Japan,’ says John, 92. ‘Our purpose was to bombard North Korean forces from the sea. ‘On the day of the Queen’s Coronation, we gathered together, and it was “hurrahs!” all round. ‘My closest Royal Navy pals were Charlie Brown, John Player, Fred Bradish, Geoff Rubithon and Bill Beck. ‘Unfortunately, Bill died recently. I see John regularly, but I’ve no idea whether my other three comrades are still around.’ ‘In 1955, it was back to civvy life for me and a career as an electrical engineer.’ Sadly, we have been able to determine that Fred passed away in 1998. We are still looking for any news about Charlie and Geoff.
