UK laser missiles praised by Ukraine

- From Michael Powell in Kyiv

UKraiNE’S army has hailed the devastating impact of British-made Brimstone missiles in its fightback against Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

Footage released yesterday showed Ukrainian troops obliterating tanks and armoured personnel vehicles with the £175,000 supersonic missiles.

The weapon has been adapted to be fired from vehicles rather than from fighter jets, drones or warships as it was originally designed.

The laser-guided missile has a range of up to 37 miles and is equipped with a 13lb warhead. Footage from the battlefield and firing ranges in Ukraine showed the missiles travelling at speed before engulfing targets in fireballs.

Ukraine’s military claimed they had given them the edge against Putin’s army. it said: ‘From the first days of the open invasion... the support of our foreign partners has played an important role in countering enemy forces.

‘Weapons, material and technical means that give us fellow countries are our strength on the way to victory.’

Prime minister Boris Johnson last week pledged an extra £1.3billion in military funding to aid Ukraine’s defence, on top of the £1.5billion of support already given.
