Six arrests as fans celebrate title win
SEVERAL fans were arrested as Celtic supporters celebrated the club’s title win in Glasgow at the weekend.
Thousands gathered in the Glasgow Cross area after Saturday’s match against Motherwell, which kicked off at 12.15pm. Police described the level of antisocial behaviour as ‘unacceptable’.
Officers made six arrests and issued four fixed-penalty fines. Police are also investigating vandalism at the historic Tolbooth building.
Videos on social media showed violence, public urinating and drugtaking. Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland said: ‘While there was an unacceptable level of anti-social behaviour and littering, there were no serious incidents or disorder. There were some outbreaks of minor disorder and our officers acted swiftly and robustly to prevent escalation and protect safety.’
A Police Scotland spokesman said:
‘Officers are investigating vandalism to the door of the Tolbooth and inquiries are ongoing.’
The match at Celtic Park was followed by the presentation of the Scottish Premiership trophy.
Glasgow Labour MSP Paul Sweeney tweeted: ‘Disappointing to hear reports that Celtic fans gathered at Glasgow Cross have broken into the 1930 Mercat Cross building by Edith Burnet Hughes.
‘I hope that Greater Glasgow Police secure this historic building and that no damage has occurred beyond forcing its door.’
