Invincible season for the Light Blues
MALKY Thomson’s Rangers side signed off for the season as Invincibles after losing just four league points across the entirety of the Park’s Motor Group SWPL. Their 3-1 win over Celtic was of little more than a statistical note with the championship already secured last weekend, but they signed off in style and ended the season undefeated. Celtic, who beat Rangers in the Scottish Women’s Cup, have the final to contest later this month against Glasgow City at Tynecastle. A Jane Ross double with a Demi Vance freekick sandwiched in between gave Rangers a commanding 3-0 lead at the break. A Caitlin Hayes header pulled a goal back for Celtic in the second period but by that stage it was too little, too late for the Parkhead side to force a way back into the game. ‘We are a bit deflated but the first half wasn’t good enough and we didn’t do ourselves justice,’ said Celtic’s Jodie Bartle. ‘We need to build momentum towards the final and we have to take that from the second-half performance.’ Celtic now need to lift themselves for the final as they look to overcome Glasgow City and make it a cup double. It has been a mixed bag for Celtic this season, with their third-place finish meaning they lose out on a Champions League place. For City, though, the relinquishing of the title after a 14-year hold on it gives them ample motivation to ensure that they do not finish the season with nothing to show for it. Eileen Gleeson’s side rounded off their league campaign with a 0-0 draw away to Hibs, while Motherwell beat Aberdeen 3-2. Hearts beat Partick Thistle 3-0 and Spartans ran out 2-1 winners over Hamilton Accies. Glasgow Girls and Women FC have been promoted to the SWPL after beating Boroughmuir Thistle 3-1 at home.
