Squirming Starmer gets Beergate grilling from the Loose Women

- By Daniel Martin Policy Editor

SIR Keir Starmer insisted the police probe into Beergate was a ‘completely different situation’ to the investigation into parties at Downing Street, as he was grilled by ITV’s Loose Women yesterday.

The Labour leader revealed that around 15 people attended the event in Durham last year – a higher number than he has previously admitted.

He said he had ‘put everything on the line’ by promising to step down if he is fined over alleged Covid rule-breaking. Sir Keir was pictured drinking a beer in an MP’s office last April at a time when indoor gatherings were banned except for work purposes. The event is now subject to an investigation by Durham Police.

Yesterday Loose Women panellists Ruth Langsford, Linda Robson, Brenda Edwards and Jane Moore asked Sir Keir why he has not resigned already when he previously called for Boris Johnson to quit over the police probe into parties at No 10.

‘By then we already knew that there was industrial-scale rule-breaking in Downing Street... so it was a completely different situation’, the Labour leader said.

He added: ‘I have put everything on the line because I think that is the right thing to do. That is the complete opposite to the Prime Minister.’ Sir Keir maintained he did not break the rules and is ‘sure’ the police will come to the same conclusion.
