Lose their jobs in the Government economy drive?

- BOB RICHARDSON, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire.

THE threat of massive job cuts will get WFH civil servants off their Pelotons and back to their desks.

MICK BRIDGSTOCK, Rushden, Northants.

HOW typical of the Government that awarded lucrative contracts to their mates to try to appease the public by attacking the civil service, an easy target. Yes, there’s certainly room for reduction and reform, but not at grassroots level where the real graft takes place. You think bureaucratic delays are bad now? Just wait until all the staff who have worked tirelessly are replaced by cheaper alternatives. What has grown out of all proportion is the senior civil service. It’s time to strip out the top layers of private secretaries, directors, deputy directors and assistant directors, all with mini-empires. Let’s hope Jacob rees-Mogg has put his passive-aggressive notes on their desks.

C. REES, Tonyrefail, Rhondda Cynon Taf.

IT’S an interesting response to the cost of living challenge to make 91,000 people unemployed, taking their wages and taxes out of the economy. How will that help Britain grow its way out of the crisis?

RICHARD GARTSIDE, Deal, Kent. cUTTING the civil service is overdue. It’s grossly overstaffed and extremely expensive, with high salaries and indexlinked pensions. I hope job cuts actually happen and it’s not just a soundbite.

JANET MARSHALL, Gosforth, Cumbria.

AFTER sorting out the civil service, deal with the bloated NHS, top-heavy with overpaid pen-pushers. Then there might be enough cash left to recruit more doctors and nurses.

MIKE TAYLOR, Haltwhistle, Northumb. aS WELL as cutting civil service jobs, the number of Mps must be drastically reduced. With devolved government in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, there is no requirement for Mps as well. Bring our democracy up to date and abolish the House of Lords, replacing it with fewer elected members. The cost savings could be enormous.

JOHN PEERS, Menai Bridge, Anglesey.

WELL, despite the cuts, at least one civil servant in five will be able to continue working from home.
