Tavernier out to match hero Greig by lifting Europa trophy

JAMES TAVERNIER wants to join John Greig as one of the all-time Rangers greats by raising the Europa League trophy in Seville.

Voted Greatest Ever Ranger, Greig became the one and only Ibrox skipper to hold European silverware aloft 50 years ago. Desperate to earn his own place in the history books, Tavernier insists he won’t be able to face the former manager unless Rangers beat Eintracht Frankfurt in tomorrow night’s final.

‘I think the only time I can really speak to him is if I lift that trophy up,’ said the attacking full-back. ‘If I don’t then he’s going to give me some stick.

‘My aim is to lift that trophy. That sort of levels the playing field a little bit. I have little moments with John, but it puts you in a category with most of the greats of the club and that’s where we all want to be.
