ALL of the heirlooms featured in this series are treasures to the families who own them, but every now and then, an item comes along that has great historical significance, too. That happens tonight when Gary Fisher (pictured) brings in a Jewish prayer book that belonged to his Austrian grandparents, Emanuel and Gisela. Unlike other members of Gary’s family, Emanuel and Gisela survived internment at the Theresienstadt concentration camp, and their prayer book — signed by many of the camp’s residents — survived with them. Book expert Chris Shaw tackles this delicate project with the care and attention it deserves. We also follow the restoration of a battered radio that accompanied Geoff Allum and his late cousin Donald on an amazing adventure in 1971. The pair spent 73 days rowing across the Atlantic, and with just a sextant for navigation, their radio was an essential tool, giving an accurate time of day courtesy of the BBC World Service. Can electronics whizz Mark Stuckey get it crackling into life once again? The other fascinating items brought to the barn this week are a futuristic mid-century egg chair with hidden speakers, and a 1950s horse racing game that travelled all the way from Baghdad.
