Vladimir Putin’s first invasion of Ukraine, he visited the Donbas region, posing for photographs with pro-Russian warlord Aleksey Mozgovoy. Dempsey praised Mozgovoy and called the West’s efforts to broker peace a ‘US-orchestrated coup’.
Two weeks later, Mozgovoy was killed in a bomb attack, prompting Dempsey to write a glowing obituary in the Communist newspaper Morning Star. He had also backed the Stop the War coalition’s attacks on Nato.
