In the pink, Kate steps up to host in royal gardens

- By David Wilkes

KATE dazzled in coral pink as she stepped into the Queen’s shoes to host a garden party at Buckingham Palace with the Earl and Countess of Wessex yesterday.

It was announced this month that the monarch, 96, would not attend the summer events, which typically involve standing for two hours.

On a sunny afternoon, the Duchess of Cambridge, 40, wearing a Emilia Wickstead

ensemble with a hat in matching pink by Jane Taylor, joined the Wessexes on the steps of the palace.

The National Anthem was played before they mingled with the 8,000 guests in the 39-acre garden.

The Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, 58, as the most senior in the line of succession, was the official host. Princess Alexandra, 85, was also present.

The duchess greeted guests in wheelchairs from London acting company Act Up! Newham after Sterre Ploeger, 31, who uses Makaton, a sign and symbol language, called her name.

Awa Jagne, 23, said: ‘We told her we loved her dress.’ Kate also met charities such as the Foundling Museum.
