BLOODY BRIDGE, near Newcastle in County Down, gets its name from a massacre in 1641, when several prisoners were set upon and slaughtered. It’s a grim story, yet the Bridge has a certain tranquil beauty. Clare Balding (pictured) joins a group of local young walkers for a hike across the Mountains o’ Mourne, and finds that, just like the song says, they do indeed come down to the sea. The ramblers begin with a trek up to the summit of Chimney Rock, partly along an old rail track used to bring granite from quarry to sea-level. Clare remains in the Mournes for next week’s Ramblings, setting off from the more cheerfully named Happy Valley.
