HE spoke of how ‘honoured’ he had been to host Platinum Jubilee celebrations for the Queen at the weekend.

And the royals returned the favour for Tom Cruise last night as they attended the London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick.

Huge crowds greeted the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they walked up the red carpet in Leicester Square with the film’s leading man.

Kate dazzled in an off-the-shoulder Roland Mouret dress with star earrings, while William opted for a traditional velvet dinner jacket by Alexander McQueen and tuxedo trousers.

But the prince added a sartorial twist in the shape of a pair of Crockett & Jones loafers specially embroidered with the F-18 jets featured in the movie.

At one point Cruise – who appeared to boost his height with chunky heels on his shoes – reached out to help Kate, 40, up the stairs into the cinema for the charity screening, a Royal Film Performance to raise funds to support those working behind the scenes in the UK’s film industry.

Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer introduced William and Kate to the film’s cast and crew, including Cruise’s co-star Jennifer Connelly.

Cruise, 59, spoke of his admiration for the prince, a trained RAF pilot, saying: ‘We have a lot in common. We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying.’

In the film, which has received rave reviews from the critics, Cruise reprises the role of US naval aviator Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell – 36 years after the 1986 original.

The Cambridges are said to have been honoured with their own VIP preview at a London cinema last month after Cruise heard that William, 39, was a fan of the original, which co-starred Kelly McGillis.

Top Gun: Maverick will be shown across the country from May 27.
