Guilty, married GP who raped student nurse after her drink was spiked

- By James Mulholland

A MARRIED GP is facing jail after he arrived for a date with Viagra before raping a student nurse whose drink had been spiked.

Dr Manesh Gill lured the young woman to a hotel in Stirling, also bringing with him gin and contraceptives in December 2018.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that, after he was arrested, he asked a colleague: ‘What if they find morphine in her system?’

Gill, 39, who worked as a doctor in Edinburgh and lived in the capital’s Corstorphine area, denied raping the woman.

But jurors returned a unanimous guilty verdict to one charge of rape yesterday.

Calling for reports, judge Lord Tyre said it was ‘very unlikely’ he would be able to impose anything other than a ‘custodial sentence’. He added: ‘I shall continue bail... but you should put your affairs in order.’

During a four-day trial, jurors heard Gill went on the Tinder dating app and introduced himself as ‘Mike’ to the young woman.

His now 23-year-old victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said Gill lured her to his hotel room where he gave her a ‘really strong’ pink gin and lemonade.

The woman fought back tears as she said Gill sexually assaulted her as her ‘body shut down’.

She told prosecutor Stephanie Ross: ‘He was on top of me. I was trying to push him off. I couldn‘t.

He was having sex with me.’ The court was told how the father-of-three and his victim had used Snapchat to talk for about six weeks before the assault. The woman told the court that on the evening of the attack, she had drank three to four pink gins but did not feel drunk.

She was ready to leave but needed to use a toilet. Gill told her the hotel’s were out of order. The victim added: ‘He told me I could come up to his room and use that one.’

After going to his room and using the bathroom, she found Gill had made her a drink. She took a few sips and began to feel ‘more and more tired’.

She went on to say that Gill had spoken little during the assault and remained ‘quite silent’.

The woman said she said ‘No’ and ‘Stop it’ during the attack and eventually managed to get up and lock herself in the bathroom.

She said: ‘I came out of the bathroom and said, “I know what you’ve been doing to me”.’

When asked by Miss Ross whether she consented to the actions, the woman said: ‘No. It was my intention to go to the room to use the toilet and that was that.’

The woman managed to leave the hotel and contacted police.

Giving evidence to defence solicitor advocate Iain McSporran, QC, Gill said he was ‘extremely sorry’ for cheating on his wife.

He added: ‘I was meeting women on dates. I didn’t want it connected with my job or my wife.’

He said that ‘Mike’, which he used on Tinder, was a name friends called him at university.

Gill agreed he brought Viagra, a condom and the woman‘s favourite drink to the hotel, but claimed the sex was consensual, adding: ‘She was alert. She was enjoying it.’

Gill was arrested the next day and later told a colleague: ‘What if they find morphine in her system? It will be her word against mine.’

Jurors deleted claims he directly administered the substance from the charges and the identity of who did isn’t known according to the jury’s verdict.

Lord Tyre placed Gill on the sex offenders’ register and he will be sentenced on June 15.
