I’ve got Covid, says Sturgeon, hours after Sinn Fein meeting

- By Michael Blackley Scottish Political Editor

NICoLA Sturgeon last night revealed she has tested positive for Covid just hours after meeting the vice-president of Sinn Fein.

The First Minister said she has ‘mild symptoms’ and would be working from home for the ‘next few days’.

It came after she was criticised for being prepared to give an ‘eager embrace’ to Sinn Fein’s Michelle o’Neill.

Miss Sturgeon wrote on Twitter: ‘Unfortunately, I’ve tested positive for Covid after experiencing mild symptoms. In line with @scotgov guidance, I’ll work from home over next few days.’

She met Mrs o’Neill to discuss ‘shared areas of interest’ at her official residence in Edinburgh, Bute House.

The meeting is said to have been arranged at the request of Mrs o’Neill after Sinn Fein became the largest party at Stormont in elections earlier this month.

Scottish Tory constitution spokesman Donald Cameron said: ‘People across Scotland – including those who support independence – will be concerned about Nicola Sturgeon’s eager embrace of Michelle o’Neill and Sinn Fein. It seems the SNP will work with anyone so long as they support the break-up of the UK.’

After the talks, Miss Sturgeon said the Brexit process has ‘brought to the fore some very fundamental questions’ over the system of governance in the UK.

Mrs o’Neill said: ‘We both want to see an agenda for change but, ultimately, it will be the people of Scotland and the people back home in Ireland that will decide any constitutional position in the future.’

Arlene Foster pointed out that she had never met Miss Sturgeon at Bute House in all the time she was Democratic Unionist Party First Minister of Northern Ireland.

Last night Mr Cameron added: ‘It just shows that Scotland’s First Minister is only interested in talking to those who share the SNP’s desire to break up the United Kingdom.’
