Student suicide uni to pay £50k
THE family of a student who took her own life has been awarded £50,000 damages in a landmark civil case.
The University of Bristol was yesterday found liable for breaching its legal duties towards Natasha Abrahart, 20.
The second-year physics student was found dead in her private flat in April 2018, the day she was due to give a presentation in a 329-seat lecture theatre. She had been diagnosed with chronic social anxiety disorder months earlier.
At Bristol county court Judge Alex Ralton ruled the university had engaged in indirect disability discrimination. Lawyers for Miss Abrahart’s parents argued the institution breached the Equality Act 2010 by failing to adjust its assessment regime. The university is considering an appeal.
