Patient death caused by doctor who faked his age

A DOCTOR who lied about his age to land NHS jobs faces jail after he admitted the manslaughter of a patient during a routine medical procedure.

Shahida Parveen collapsed and died after Dr Isyaka Mamman botched taking a bone marrow sample from her.

Police investigated whether a hypodermic needle the doctor used pierced soft tissue around the 48-year-old’s heart rather than her breastbone. Dr Mamman yesterday pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court.

The doctor served a 12-month ban in 2005 after his lies over his age were exposed. The father-of-three applied for registration as a doctor in 1964 with a date of birth as September 1936, making him 85.

He gave false dates to appear under 65, then the NHS doctor age limit, in successful job applications jobs, a General Medical Council hearing was told.

After his ban and the phasing out of the age limit he resumed working in the NHS. Mrs Parveen collapsed during the procedure at Royal Oldham Hospital on September 3, 2018.

Dr Mamman was then at least 74, though it is not thought his age had broken NHS rules at the time. He was arrested and legal documents with various dates of birth were found at his home. Yesterday Judge Nicholas Dean QC said a prison sentence ‘is thought to be inevitable’. The doctor will be sentenced in July.
