THE GREAT BRITISH FAKE OFF!
Could it be that it’s just an illusion? Ace cake baker has answer
CURRY, pizza, ramen – you name it, she can make it.
But tuck in to Lynne Davidson’s ‘savoury’ meals and you discover they are actually for those with a sweet tooth.
The talented baker from Glenrothes, Fife, sculpts her cakes to look like foods such as steak, chicken wings and even crisps.
Miss Davidson, 36, right, who crafts amazingly realistic ‘illusion cakes’, has been running her own business, Lynne’s Cake Emporium, for nine years.
While she also takes orders for more ordinary creations such as wedding cakes, she said generic cake decorating is not for her.
She said: ‘When I first started I really took risks. I didn’t really see the point in doing it if I was just going to be a generic cake decorator like everybody else, that’s not really my style. I’ve had every disaster that you can have by taking those risks, but that’s how you learn. I absolutely love what I do.’ Miss Davidson said that while she spends roughly a day and a half on an illusion cake, her most time-consuming creations were ones depicting ramen, and rice and curry, which can sell for £150. She said: ‘The one that took the longest was probably the ramen, because it had sesame seeds that I have to make. It was the same with the curry one because I was making each grain individually, I’m cross-eyed by the end of the day!’ Most of her work is made with vanilla cake and ganache or buttercream, before being ‘brought to life’ with modelling chocolate, piping gel to create liquid effects, and fondant to craft details such as the spring onions for her ramen design.
