AS a diehard Rangers fan and devoted grandson, Dan Crossley was determined to fulfil the two major fixtures in his calendar last week – by any route possible.

And, having travelled all the way to Seville for his team’s Europa League final on Wednesday, he made it back home to the Hebrides for his grandfather’s 100th birthday party – with minutes to spare.

The 29-year-old self-employed tiler and his retired father, Jimmy, 63, left Callanish, on the Isle of Lewis, last weekend and headed via ferry, plane and hire car to cheer on the Ibrox club in Spain.

But after watching the loss to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties, father and son set off early on Thursday for their epic return leg – this time via Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Edinburgh and Stornoway to make it to Friday’s party in Laxay, on Lewis. After a freshen-up, they arrived to celebrate with grandad Donald Ferguson and family. Dan tweeted: ‘Made it home just in time to celebrate this great man’s 100th birthday with a couple of brandies and a telegram from the Queen.’
