Is the follow-up to TV’s Normal People achingly dull?

-

I AGREE with writer Emily Hall that Conversations With Friends, the new TV series by Normal People author Sally Rooney, is extremely boring (Mail). I can see no reason why the couple would be attracted to each other: they are repressed, can’t string two words together and never look at one another. Normal People was entirely different. You believed in Connell and Marianne as a couple and the sexual chemistry was amazing between two attractive people. It reminded me of when I was young.

I THINK Conversation With Friends is excellent. Emily may be better suited to Marvel movies where the action is blatantly obvious.

I’D LIKE to assure Emily that Sally Rooney’s book and the BBC adaptation are two different things. I found the book to be an interesting view of modern young women’s interests and lives. However, the TV drama is awful. Nick, the male lead, is a total bore, has a terrible moustache and looks and talks as if he’s made from wood. Bobbi is twee and Frances is colourless. The producers should have cast the actors from Derry Girls to give it some life.

CONVERSATIONS With Friends is beyond beautiful. Granted, it is a slow burn, but it’s mesmerising, magnetic and I totally got it. The chemistry between the characters Frances and Nick is intense and expertly acted.

I AM enjoying Conversations With Friends and think it’s as good as Normal People. The subject has been handled with sensitivity and it’s so much better than the usual crime and detective TV dramas. I hope Sally Rooney keeps continuing. MARJORIE GOLDSWORTHY, Bishop’s Stortford, Herts.

THANK goodness that someone else shares my view about Sally Rooney’s works. I hated Normal People and won’t watch Conversations With Friends, though I read the book. I thought it was puerile, self-indulgent and, as Emily points out, the dialogue is dreadful. However, I am the only person in my group of friends who feels like this.

I ENJOYED Normal People, but this new drama is so slow. I’ve tried to watch it three times, but have given up.

I DON’T understand the praise for Normal People. It was just teenage angst, played by people in their 20s, interspersed with five minutes of soft porn.
