Teacher gets sacked after discovery of illegal drugs

- By Ruaraidh Gilmour

A TEACHER was sacked after bringing illegal drugs to work.

Lee Watt was seen putting a bag of white powder into his pocket by a colleague.

Watt, who taught modern studies at Glenwood High School in Glenrothes, Fife, was in a car with a vulnerable child when the incident happened in October 2020.

He had been working with a colleague during a shift with Supporting Positive Paths, a service for children and adults.

The colleague reported to their employer they had also spotted the packet of white powder in the back seat after Watt stepped out. The incident was not reported to police.

Following an internal investigation, Watt admitted to being in possession of an illegal drug but claimed it was not his and he planned to dispose of it.

He said he found it at his house after a party with friends.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland decided that Watt’s fitness to teach was impaired and issued him with a reprimand. In its ruling it said: ‘The conduct constitutes an abuse of a position of trust.’

Watt now works for a recruitment company.
