- From Daniel Bates In New York

Kate Moss is set to testify in defence of ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp at his $100million defamation trial, it emerged last night.

the supermodel, 48, is expected to be among the final witnesses called by the Pirates of the Caribbean star as the case with ex-wife amber Heard wraps up.

Getting together soon after he split from actress Winona Ryder, Depp and Miss Moss were seen as one of the hottest ‘It’ couples of the 1990s during their three years together.

Miss Moss was 20 when she began her intense relationship with the actor, who was a teen idol thanks to his roles in films such as

Introduced by a celebrity columnist, they became known for their hard partying and were dubbed the ‘chicest, druggiest couple in La’ as they rolled from venue to venue, with the paparazzi following their every move.

among their favourite hangouts was the Viper Room rock club in Los angeles, which Depp owned, where they partied with the likes of Jared Leto, Keanu Reeves and Charlize theron.

Miss Moss later said that she ‘cried for years’ over the break-up while the actor said the split was ‘his fault’. the pair have reportedly remained friends.

It is thought she is likely to testify about a long-rumoured incident in the 1990s in which it is claimed Depp had pushed Miss Moss down the stairs during their often tempestuous relationship.

Miss Moss would not have been able to give evidence in the proceedings, now in their sixth week, had not the incident been brought up by Miss Heard in her evidence.

as she claimed Depp had tried to punch her sister, Whitney, in 2015, she told the jury in Fairfax, Virginia: ‘I just, in my head, instantly think of Kate Moss and stairs, and I swung at him… he didn’t push my sister down the stairs.’

Miss Heard has opened the door for Depp’s legal team calling the model to – it is expected – rebut the claim. Seconds after Miss Heard talked about it, Depp’s lawyers were seen fist bumping in apparent celebration.

During Depp’s libel trial at London’s High Court in 2020, the actress also addressed the incident. the actor had sued the Sun newspaper after it called him a ‘wife beater’ but a judge ruled the accusation was ‘substantially true’.

Miss Moss is expected to appear live via a video link, according to sources close to Depp. Her name was added to the ‘expected’ list of witnesses for Depp’s rebuttal once the main evidence finishes.

Depp, 58, will not be called by Miss Heard’s lawyers. It was reported that a source described his testimony as ‘irrelevant to the heart of this case’.

He is suing Miss Heard for $50million (£40million) for a 2018 column in the Washington Post in which she said she was a domestic violence survivor. His ex-wife, 36, has countersued for $100million (£80million) for Depp’s lawyers allegedly smearing her.
