McCoist hails McGregor as one of the greats and wants Davis to stay put

- By JOHN McGARRY

IBROX legend Ally McCoist insists Allan McGregor can stand tall alongside all the other great Rangers goalkeepers of the modern era. The 40-year-old came on for the last minute of extra-time in Rangers’ Scottish Cup victory over Hearts on Saturday in what is being interpreted as a sign his long and storied career in Govan is over. Asked to sum up McGregor’s contribution over two decades, McCoist succinctly replied: ‘Phenomenal. Rangers have had some unbelievable goalkeepers in the past, particularly over the last 30, 40 years. ‘You go back through them and there is (Chris) Woods, (Andy) Goram, (Stefan) Klos and now McGregor, who is up there with all of them. ‘I get asked all the time who’s the best — Goram or McGregor? ‘But it’s the most unfair question of all time. I played with Goram, who was fantastic, but McGregor is out of this world. He really is. ‘His performances and contribution to the club over these last few years have been unbelievable. He made a couple of errors earlier in the season when he was up at Ross County and everybody automatically puts it down to age but that’s wrong because goalkeepers at 17 make the same mistakes that keepers at 37 make. ‘I don’t think it was anything to do with age. It was just one of those games he had. I’ve got to be honest, I don’t know what will happen with Greegs. He’ll make his own mind up.’ It’s important for manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst to get the right outcome in impending talks but it’s equally vital that decisions are arrived at swiftly. The Dutchman has a major rebuild on his hands. Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo have not done nearly enough to merit further loan spells. Connor Goldson looks set to move back to England under freedom of contract while Steven Davis has also played his last game as things stand.

McCoist feels he’s seen enough in the veteran midfielder of late to suggest that offering him another year’s contract would not be based on sentiment. ‘You’d definitely think they’ll be offering Connor Goldson something,’ he added. ‘And Steven Davis over these last two games looks like he’s got another year in him anyway. ‘So it will be interesting to see what happens. ‘You know what Greegsy is like. He might not fancy it. He may have had enough. ‘But Davo certainly looks like he could play on. ‘Connor is the one that’s interesting. I know they’ve offered him something and it will be interesting to see what happens. ‘From Rangers’ point of view, I think it would be great if he stayed.’
