Steamroller thieves in (very slow) getaway

- By Joe Hutchison

THE thieves who made off with a two-and-a-half ton steamroller must have found it hard to make a quick getaway.

Police are investigating the theft of a Bomag steamroller near Castle Kennedy, Wigtownshire, over the weekend. The heavy plant items are primarily used for levelling road surfaces but the mystery surrounding the theft deepened last night when Dumfries and Galloway Council said the piece of highway machinery did not belong to them. A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed the theft and urged anyone with information to call them on 101.

After the force launched its appeal for information, social media users were quick to poke good-natured fun at the theft. One sought to reassure officers, saying: ‘I’m sure you’ll catch up with them!’

‘Can’t have gotten far’ was another jokey comment.

Second-hand Bomag rollers can change hands for between £10,000 and £15,000.
