Slash fuel duty

-

THE easiest and quickest way the Prime Minister can help everyone financially in the cost of living crisis is to make a massive cut to fuel duty. It was reduced by 5p from 57.95p per litre in the Chancellor’s mini Budget, but that made little impact at the pumps. Many filling stations did not pass on the full benefit to drivers.

A tax reduction of 30p that needs no legislation to implement would cut £15 from the cost of a 50-litre fill-up. This would not only benefit every car owner, but all consumers.

Transport costs would be lower for everything delivered by diesel-guzzling lorries and vans.

This move would be the quickest, easiest and most affordable way to start reducing inflation.

The increase in the VAT take from higher fuel prices would cover the loss of income from this cut.

MIKE WRAY, Leconfield, E. Yorks.

THE problem with cutting taxes is that it doesn’t assist the unemployed or benefit claimants. All it does is help the people who are most likely to vote Conservative in the next General Election. To my mind, that is not putting the country first.

ANDREW REVILL, Winchester, hants.
