Another poll, Nicola? It’s a waste of money
HERE we go again! First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is calling for another referendum on Scottish independence. Its only uplifting aspect would be the end of SNP politicians in Westminster. No more loudmouth Ian Blackford and his stuck record: ‘Resign, Prime Minister!’ Has Nicola considered that independence could spell the end of the SNP as Brexit did for Ukip?

CAN I give the UK Government a piece of advice: ignore the call for another independence referendum and concentrate on the critical task of tackling the cost-of-living crisis. This is what the SNP should be focused on in Scotland, not another divisive poll, which will result only in more wasted money. Nicola Sturgeon is taking her eye off the ball — again!
E. NICHOLLS, Dunfermline.
NICOLA Sturgeon’s latest independence bid is based on a false premise, that of having a ‘democratic mandate’ from Scots. Ms Sturgeon has never had a majority of Scots backing her if you count the number of Scots entitled to a vote.
GERALD EDWARDS, Glasgow.
THERE is no chance whatsoever of a legitimate referendum to break up the UK in 2023. Apart from the legality, the majority of Scots do not want it. So it seems to me that all Nicola Sturgeon is after is a court case where the unwinnable legal argument and inevitable loss can be spun to make it appear she is being blocked by Boris Johnson – if he is still PM; if not, Westminster will do – and she can seem to have made a valiant try in the best style of Robert the Bruce. She can then move on to pastures new.
ALEXANDER MCKAY, Edinburgh.
THE Scotland of today is not the country I grew up in. It has become a divisive, inward-looking shadow of itself and that is solely down to the SNP and its perpetual grievance mentality. Despite comprehensive failure in every aspect of devolved responsibility over the past 15 years they are consumed by their neverending mantra of a second independence referendum – which the clear majority of Scots do not want at this time. I doubt the divisions created by the dogma, intransigence and policies of the Scottish Government will ever heal.

THE UK has been a successful political union for more than 300 years – so why should we have to tolerate the eccentricities of this SNP minority administration? ROBERT I. G. SCOTT, Ceres, Fife.
