I’m in awe of Dame Kelly’s brave stand
I WAS touched by the anguish described by Dame Kelly holmes as she gave an interview on This Morning about coming out as gay. I’ve no doubt the trolls will be spewing their vitriolic bile. however, the vast majority will be supportive of her. Thanks to her athletic achievements, she is a national treasure. I hope she can move on with her life and find happiness with someone special. What really matters in life is whether you are a good person. one day people will not have to justify their sexuality on daytime TV.

LIKE most people, I care little about a person’s sexuality. When high-profile people come out as gay, my usual response is: ‘So what?’ But Dame Kelly holmes is different. It’s not due to the fact she is a world-class athlete and British olympic great, but because of her Army background. She served her country with distinction, yet lived in fear of being revealed to be gay. looking for drugs is one thing, but it’s extraordinary that in the 1990s, military authorities searched through the personal belongings of servicemen and women looking for clues as to their sexuality. I can’t believe gay people could face a court martial just for being who they are. Are we really talking about the proud traditions of our Armed Forces? If there were medals awarded for guts and courage, Kelly would need to add an extension to her house to hold them all.

I Feel sorry that Dame Kelly holmes, a great person and athlete, should have felt she needed to make a public statement about her private life. We should all accept others for who they are, not what society decides to classify them as.
