Cut tax, help drivers
THE Mail cannot condone the blocking of motorways and major roads by protesters demonstrating against the cost of fuel.
But we understand the frustration of drivers who need their vehicles for work and have seen petrol and diesel prices almost double since the start of the pandemic. A modest VAT cut has had little effect on pump prices and there is abundant evidence of profiteering by retailers.
The National Insurance hike has only compounded the financial agony for millions of families.
Fuel inflation is a global problem. But the Government can mitigate the shock by supporting motorists through this crisis.
The Conservative way to do it is with tax cuts. Ministers seem to have forgotten that fundamental principle of toryism.
