Music fans facing more trains chaos

Strike action sees limited service after festival

- By John Paul Breslin

THOUSANDS of concertgoers face travel chaos after ScotRail confirmed no trains will run following a major music festival this Sunday.

Around 200,000 fans will flock to Glasgow Green to attend the three-day TRNSMT festival at the weekend.

However, they face a shortage of train services due to ongoing strike action, which has caused chaos at recent concerts including Calvin Harris, Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran.

Tens of thousands of people are due to see stars such as Paolo Nutini, Sam Fender, The Strokes and Lewis Capaldi at TRNSMT, with each headline act expected to finish around 11pm.

However, the temporary timetable in place means there will be a very limited number of trains out of the city centre after 11pm on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday night.

Worse still, no trains will be available for music fans who stay until the end of the festival at 11pm on Sunday. Fans from the North and SouthWest Scotland have also been advised that bus replacement services could be in place on Saturday and Sunday due to Network Rail engineering work between Inverness and Aberdeen and between Dumfries and Kilmarnock.

The situation, which comes amid ongoing pay disputes, means fans travelling home from the hugely popular events could be left stranded.

ScotRail, which has been run by an arms-length Scottish Government company since April, has urged fans to travel early where possible.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail’s head of customer operations, said: ‘We have another busy week of live music in Glasgow. We’re urging customers to plan ahead and to know their travel options. Customers going to TRNSMT on Sunday should be aware there will be no trains after the event, so please check your entire journey.’

Gavin Stevenson, Night Time Industry Association Scotland vice-chairman, said: ‘There is a huge concern that limited rail services across Scotland will

leave many stranded at night, compromising the safety of staff and customers.

‘It is important stakeholders bring this to a conclusion quickly, particularly given the fragility of events businesses.’

■ US rock band Guns N’ Roses had been due to play at Glasgow Green this evening.

However, last night they announced the gig was being cancelled due to ‘illness and medical advice’.
