YOU’D be forgiven for thinking that young people don’t watch TV any more, instead preferring to peer into their smartphones day and night. There are, however, still some quality dramas out there aimed at youngsters, and this is a fine example. Based on the bestselling Pony Club Secrets books, it follows English teenager Issie Brown (Macey Chipping, pictured) as she adjusts to a new life in New Zealand. Like Black Beauty, it places a girl’s inspirational bond with horses at its heart — and one of those horses, a glowing white steed called Blaze, only Issie can see. Part coming-ofage tale, part-fantasy, part-adventure, this has a lot going for it, from beautiful scenery to tense family dynamics and environmental peril. And as Issie, Chipping is an engaging heroine. As the new, third series begins, Issie has invited her grandfather to visit — but it remains to be seen what her mum will think of that. The first two seasons are also still on iPlayer, if you need to catch up.
