Jenny diski (1947-2016). The londonborn novelist and essayist, a former teacher, was taken in at 15 by the nobel-winning writer doris lessing — whom she called ‘the least motherly, least warm person i’ve
ever known’. her memoir, about living with terminal cancer, was published a week before her death. Ferdinand Von Zeppelin (1838-1917). The German general invented the Zeppelin rigid airship. its debut flight in 1900 ended after 18 minutes when it landed in a lake. But, by 1906, one of his airships managed a 24-hour flight, and a passenger service was launched in 1910. They were most famously used against Britain in World War i — the first recorded casualties came when four people were killed in norfolk in 1915.
