FURUE CLINCHES WIN WITH SENSATIONAL FINAL ROUND

- JIM BLACK

JAPAN’S Ayaka Furue carded a stunning final round of 62 to win the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald Links yesterday. Furue (above) started the day four shots off the lead shared by Lydia Ko and Celine Boutier, but fired ten birdies — including six in a row from the sixth — to secure victory in an event co-sanctioned by the LPGA and Ladies European Tour. The 22-year-old, who was still an amateur when she won the first of her seven titles on the LPGA of Japan Tour in 2019, finished 21-under-par and three shots clear of Boutier, who secured second with a birdie on the 18th in her 69. South Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim and American Cheyenne Knight shared third place on 17under, with Ko and Alison Lee another stroke back in fifth. The English trio of Charley Hull, Bronte Law and Georgia Hall finished 11 shots behind the winner in a tie for 18th.
