MISTAKE COSTS PAVEL

-

SCOTTISH gymnast Pavel Karnejenko claimed fifth in the men’s allround final — despite undergoing surgery for a broken ankle less than three months ago. The Estonian-born, 22-year-old has been managing his recovery with ice baths, filled by running a hose from the kitchen tap of his first-floor apartment in the Athlete Village in Birmingham. Although he was in the medal positions after a strong performance on the rings and vault, a bad mistake on the parallel bars cost him dearly. His score of 80.650 fell short as Jake Jarman grabbed his first international title ahead of England team-mate James Hall. ‘I’m a little gutted because of how close I was to a medal if I didn’t make that mistake,’ said Karnejenko, who will compete on the rings today. ‘I’m just hungrier than ever.’ Scotland team-mate Frank Baines was seventh.
