Rangers game pushed back 24 hours
at 21.00CET. This is due to the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the events surrounding the national mourning for Queen Elizabeth II. ‘Away fans will not be authorised at the games and, as a matter of sporting fairness, Rangers’ fans will not be authorised for the return leg in Naples. UEFA urges fans not to travel and to respect this extraordinary situation.’ Rangers apologised to supporters for any inconvenience and vowed to refund any fans who can’t attend the game on Wednesday. A club statement read: ‘Rangers, of course, recognise this switch in date will inconvenience a number of our loyal supporters, and refunds will be available to those unable to attend the match. ‘Additionally, no away fans will be present at the match, allowing the club to make additional tickets available to MyGers members as a priority. ‘UEFA have also confirmed that, as a matter of sporting integrity, no Rangers fans will be permitted to attend the return fixture in Naples. ‘The club can only apologise for any inconvenience caused by the most unique and sad circumstances which are beyond our control.’ The National Police Chiefs’ Council said in a statement that a national policing operation had been activated and that UK Policing was working closely with other organisations to ensure events are held ‘safely and with the appropriate security’. The NPCC added: ‘Following the decisions of the Premier League and EFL to cancel this weekend’s matches, we will work with clubs to try and ensure that, where possible, fixtures can take place safely when balanced against the requirement to support national events and deliver day-to-day policing. ‘This is a unique situation and we are working closely with everyone involved.’ Celtic’s Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland on Wednesday remains unaffected, as does Hearts’ trip to Latvia to face RFS in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.
