DAVID LLOYD JONES

Born in Pontypridd, Lord Lloyd-Jones, 70, is the court’s first justice to come from Wales. A Welsh speaker, he was appointed to the High Court in 2005 and acted as adviser to the court in the Pinochet litigation before the House of Lords. In 2012 he was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal and last year became the inaugural President of the Law Council of Wales.

DAME VIVIEN ROSE

Lady Rose, 62, became a Justice of the Supreme Court in April last year. Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, and Brasenose College, Oxford, she was called to the Bar in 1984. In 1995 she joined the Government Legal Service. In 2013 she was sworn in as a High Court Judge in the Chancery Division. She was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2019.

ROBERT JOHN REED

Lord Reed, 66, took up appointmen­t as President of the Supreme Court in 2020, becoming a life peer. He was educated at the universiti­es of Edinburgh and Oxford before qualifying as an advocate in Scotland and a barrister in England and Wales. He practised in civil cases and serious crime before serving as a senior judge in Scotland for 13 years.

BEN STEPHENS

Lord Stephens, 67, became a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2020. Educated at Manchester University, he was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1977. He was appointed as a High Court Judge in Northern Ireland in 2007 before being assigned to the Family Division from 2008. He was Hague Convention liaison judge for child abduction cases until 2014.

PHILIP JAMES SALES

Lord Sales, 60, worked as a barrister and QC before his appointmen­t to the High Court. He read law at both Churchill College, Cambridge, and Worcester College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar in 19 5 and became a Queen’s Counsel in 2006. In 200 he joined the High Court Chancery Division and was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal.
