CHRIS SUTTON’S PLAYER RATINGS

ENGLAND (4X-X2-X3-)1T)ETAEMAMAVAEVREARGAEGE X4..X7

-

JORDAN PICKFORD 5

Little protection from his defence. England goalkeeper can thank his crossbar for stopping Christian Pulisic from denying him his first clean sheet of this World Cup.

KIERAN TRIPPIER 4.5

Fortunate when Weston McKennie blazed over a glorious chance to open the scoring. Then lucky to see Pulisic smash his shot against the crossbar.

JOHN STONES 5

Both centre-backs were constantly playing ‘passies’ with one another. That was slightly frustrating to see.

HARRY MAGUIRE 6

Did a nice impression of Lionel Messi early on when dribbling into the opposition box. This wasn’t England’s night but whenever a cross came into the box, Maguire was the one heading clear.

LUKE SHAW 5

Most of the USA’S chances were coming down his side, including the cross which led to McKennie’s missed opportunity. Shaw was troubled by Sergino Dest and Timothy Weah all night.

DECLAN RICE 4.5

Bellingham and Mount are given licence to get further forward but Rice stays back as a safety net. But the defensive midfielder who impressed the most was Tyler Adams. Tough night for Rice.

JUDE BELLINGHAM 4.5

Worrying sight when 19-year-old midfielder took a heavy blow from Haji Wright. England were at their best when playing one-touch passes, but Bellingham was limited here.

BUKAYO SAKA 4

As the game grew, Saka’s influence waned. It was unfortunate that he couldn’t wrap his foot around Shaw’s cross to score. Not his night.

MASON MOUNT 4.5

Struggled to have any sort of impact here, other than one snap-shot which was saved by Matt Turner shortly before the half-time break.

RAHEEM STERLING 4

As England continued to struggle to take control of the game, you wondered how long Southgate would wait before changing the front line. Finally, he was hooked for Jack Grealish.

HARRY KANE 5

First chance to score was blocked by Walker Zimmerman. Second chance was a bicycle kick that never came to be. From then on, Kane was feeding on crumbs. Went close again at the death.

SUBSTITUTES JACK GREALISH (FOR STERLING, 67MIN) 5.5

After more than an hour of watching Engald labour, Grealish came on to try to dazzle.

JORDAN HENDERSON (FOR BELLINGHAM, 68) 5

Brought on as Southgate looked to gain some sense of control in the midfield.

MARCUS RASHFORD (FOR SAKA, 78) 5.5

Prefers playing off the flank but didn’t have long enough to stretch his legs here.

MANAGER: GARETH SOUTHGATE 4

Same team, same formation, but not the same dominance that England exerted over Iran earlier this week.

USA (4-3-3):

Turner 7; Dest 7 (Moore 78), Zimmerman 7, Ream 7, Robinson 7; McKennie 7.5 (Aaronson 77), Adams 8 , Musah 7.5; Weah 7 (Reyna 83), Wright 7 (Sargent 83), Pulisic 7.5. Manager: Gregg Berhalter 7.

REFEREE: JESUS VALENZUELA (VEN) 6

Not a great deal for the Venezuelan to do. The most interesting aspect was he added only a single minute of stoppage time in the first half! Let a few tackles go in an uncontroversial night.
