A VERY f lattering portrait of Boris, unveiled by...Boris!

- By Tom Witherow Senior Political Correspondent

THE walls of the prestigious Carlton Club are adorned with paintings of some of Britain’s most memorable leaders, such as Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.

Now former Tory PM Boris Johnson has taken his place alongside them after he unveiled a flattering portrait of himself at the London club yesterday, a tradition for all outgoing Conservative prime ministers.

The almost life-size painting by artist Richard Stone shows a slimline Mr Johnson wearing a blue suit and tie, with his arms crossed and his trademark flop of scruffy blond hair.

Thought to have cost tens of thousands of pounds, it was commissioned while Mr Johnson was still in power. Mr Stone has also painted almost all the leading members of the Royal Family, including the late Queen,

while his political subjects have included Nelson Mandela and Baroness Thatcher.

Mr Johnson used the unveiling event to issue a rallying cry to the Conservative Party. The former prime minister told supporters that the political dynamic will change, allowing the Tories to ‘win again’.

Extracts from his speech reveal that Mr Johnson said: ‘Only one party really believes in Brexit... and when people realise this, I think the political dynamic is going to change.

‘So never give in, keep fighting, keep backing the Government – keep making the case for levelling up, for opportunities and for a dynamic, low-tax, global Britain. That is how we will win again.’

Mr Johnson added: ‘The Conservative Party will recover.’
