My £2.5million home cost me just £100

Charity worker scoops house in lottery draw

- By Joe Hutchison

SET in a sprawling eight acres of land in the heart of the stunning Lake District, it is the kind of dream home normally only available to the super-rich.

So former charity worker Grant Carson considers himself ‘one of the luckiest men in Scotland’ after winning it in a MillionPound House Draw run by charity fundraising firm Omaze.

The five-bedroom farmhouse comes mortgage-free, with all stamp duty and legal fees covered – as well as £100,000 in cash.

Until last month, 58-year-old Mr Carson had been helping disabled people seeking employment and accessible housing. He has lived in his three-bed semi in Glasgow for 17 years, having previously shared it with his childhood sweetheart Ruth who died in 2011.

He said: ‘I couldn’t quite believe it at first, it’s not your average Friday night that someone comes to your door and tells you that you’ve won a £2,500,000 house. I might be one of the luckiest men in Scotland. I love the Lake District, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the country, I’m still pinching myself that I actually own a house here.

‘I’m not sure what I’ll do long-term yet, but I’m going to move in for a while and enjoy it.

‘Having worked at a charity for so long, I know first-hand how important it is to raise money. I think these Omaze draws are fantastic for the charitable sector.’

Mr Carson – who spent £100 on a bundle of tickets that gave him 850 entries to the contest – is free to live in the house, rent it out or sell it.

As well as making him a multimillionaire, the draw raised £850,000 for Dogs Trust. Fittingly, Mr Carson now plans to get a dog.
