WHAT can I plant in between paving stones?

Sarah King, Southampton.

PlanTIng in the cracks between paving stones gives a romantic, softening effect. There are plenty of robust, but small, flowers that work well.

Creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is an evergreen shrub, with fragrant clusters of purple blooms that don’t grow much beyond 10cm high, while chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a perennial with daisy-like flowers reaching 25cm.

Mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus) is a pink and white daisylike flower. Some people like the tiny leaves of mind-your-own-business (Soleirolia soleirolii), but it can be a thug.

Mix seeds with compost, press into the cracks and water well.
