How to live like a lord of the ringlets

IT’s a grand house built by a small and unglamorous mechanical component. But now the palatial property which once belonged to a wealthy industrialist is up for sale as a magnificent family home.

scotscraig sprawls in a private 1½ acres of mature gardens within walking distance of Paisley town centre.

The imposing eight-bedroom property was built on the proceeds of one of many factories and mills which dominated the town’s economy in the 19th century.

Completed in 1901, scotscraig was the home of John scott Eadie, of Eadie Bros, a company which made ‘ring travellers’.

These tiny metal ringlets were a vital component in the textile yarn-spinning process. Happily for the Eadie family, they were parts which needed to be frequently replaced, and a fortune was built from their manufacture.

Having spent some decades as a school from the late 1950s, scotscraig became a residential property once more and is now up for sale for offers over £900,000.

The price may seem steep, but for the money prospective buyers have the chance to snap up a house which boasts four storeys, including a billiards room and a five-room cellar.

If space is still tight, a coach house sits in the grounds.

Estate agent Rettie said: ‘A spectacular Tudor revival style home, set in approximately 1½ acres of mature landscaped grounds, this category B listed property offers circa 7,400 sq ft over three levels.

‘With a wealth of period features in a scots renaissance style, this home is arguably one of Renfrewshire’s finest. The current owners have taken great care in restoring and maintaining the property, including details such as a spectacular carved staircase and large wainscoted reception hallway.

‘A beautiful, recessed entry gives way to a tree-lined tarmac drive with ample parking for several cars and provides access to the rear of the plot along with a sizeable coach house/garage.’

It would be easy to get lost in scotscraig. The first floor alone boasts five bedrooms, three bathrooms and the billiards room.

At ground floor level there is a grand entrance hall, dining room, lounge and kitchen, while on the third floor sit three more bedrooms, a small kitchen and a store room.

In terms of location, the house is situated in the leafy enclave of Brodie Park in Paisley. The town centre is around a 20 minute walk from the property, as is Paisley Canal station for links to Glasgow and beyond.

Glasgow Airport can easily be reached by car within 15 minutes.

Eadie Bros survived as a major employer in the town until the late 20th century and now lives on in spirit as part of Eadie & Kanai, which continues to manufacture components for the textile industry from a unit in the town’s scott’s Road.
