Watson wants to be a Scotland star like mum

- By SEAN VINCENT

KILMARNOCK midfielder David Watson is aiming to emulate his mother and play for Scotland. The 18-year-old signed a new contract at Rugby Park this week after breaking into the first team in recent months. His mum, Claire Houston, played for her country before he was born and watched him make his league debut at Ibrox in March. Now the Prestwick teenager’s ambition is to establish himself as a regular in Derek McInnes’ side and push for international honours. ‘It was quite scary because there was 50,000 there for the game with Rangers,’ said Watson. ‘You don’t play in front of crowds at reserve-level football so it’s a wee bit daunting. ‘Once you get settled and get a few touches of the ball it’s not as bad. ‘My mother, dad and wee brother were there. It was good to look up and see them in the stand. Mum played with Scotland so it’s something that runs in the family and I hope to do the same one day. I think she was crying when I went on. ‘It was a proud moment and hopefully I can keep on making my family proud.’ Watson hopes there will be no tears at the end of the season with regards to Killie’s top-flight status. The talented youngster, whose new deal runs to 2025, has come into McInnes’ team at a tough time, with the Ayrshire men just a point above bottom team Ross County. He made two appearances in the League Cup at the start of the season and has now played nine first-team games. ‘It’s been a good step up, I think I have taken the challenge on quite well,’ said Watson ahead of today’s crucial clash with visitors Livingston. ‘Obviously, the gaffer believing in me and putting the trust in me to put me in means a lot. That has given me a lot of confidence and belief. ‘I have been here since I was seven and it’s been brilliant, so I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. ‘I am happy where I am. I am getting first-team football, which I have always wanted here. ‘I look at other players like Rory McKenzie. He is similar to me and he has made 300 appearances, so I would look up to someone like him.’
