Police slam Celtic fans as celebrations descend into chaos in Glasgow
POLICE SCOTLAND have hit out at Celtic fans after sections of Glasgow city centre were plunged into chaos on Saturday afternoon. Thousands of supporters gathered in the Trongate area to celebrate after their team had lifted the Premiership trophy following a 5-0 win over Aberdeen. But boozed-up fans turned the area into nothing short of a warzone, with broken bottles and litter covering much of the streets. Some even started fighting with each other, with police confirming yesterday that 10 arrests had been made and that some of their officers had been attacked. Three people were seriously assaulted in separate attacks, with a 31-year-old man still in a serious condition in hospital. Police added that a further eight people were issued with fixed penalty notices and 18 people sustained minor injuries, mainly due to intoxication. Many of the surrounding roads had to be closed on Saturday afternoon — and Police Scotland have blasted the ‘unacceptable’ conduct of supporters. Superintendent Gerry Corrigan, Greater Glasgow Division, said: ‘Yesterday afternoon (Saturday, May 27), thousands of Celtic supporters gathered in the area of Glasgow Cross for several hours to celebrate their team’s achievement. ‘Working with partners, a proportionate policing plan was in place which facilitated the gathering, prioritised public safety and sought to minimise disruption to businesses and communities. ‘Throughout the day, there was an unacceptable level of anti-social behaviour and incidents of disorder. Police officers took swift and robust action to prevent these escalating. ‘Three people were seriously assaulted in three separate incidents during the event. A 31-year-old man remains in a serious condition within Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after being attacked.’ There were similar scenes when Celtic won the league last year, while Rangers fans wrecked George Square in 2021 at the height of lockdown. First Minister Humza Yousaf was highly critical of Rangers fans two years ago, hitting out at the ‘absolutely disgraceful’ scenes at George Square in his role as Justice Secretary at the time. Sportsmail asked the Scottish Government last night if Mr Yousaf wished to make any comment on the conduct of Celtic supporters, but a response was not forthcoming. Instead, a Scottish Government spokesperson said: ‘The vast majority of football supporters are well behaved, however the Scottish Government condemns the incidents of anti-social behaviour that took place yesterday afternoon. ‘We fully support Police Scotland to take appropriate and proportionate action in response to any act of anti-social behaviour.’
