Robertson injury boost for Scotland and Liverpool

- By LEWIS STEELE

SCOTLAND and Liverpool have been handed a major boost after it was revealed that Andy Robertson has avoided serious injury despite hobbling off during Tuesday’s friendly defeat to Northern Ireland. The 30-year-old national team skipper returned to Merseyside for scans and it appears he has escaped any long-standing injury. He is still a doubt for forthcoming club games, with Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasing side playing three times in eight days from Sunday, but is not set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. That will come as a huge relief to Scotland boss Steve Clarke, with his team’s opening match of Euro 2024 against hosts Germany now less than three months away. Seeing Robertson limp off the pitch, after Anfield team-mate Conor Bradley had scored for Northern Ireland, was a case of deja vu for Liverpool fans after the left-back returned from the autumn international camp with a dislocated shoulder. That saw him miss three months of the season after surgery. This latest injury is said to be more of an impact-related knock, similar to the one Wataru Endo suffered in the Carabao Cup final. Liverpool’s Japanese midfielder returned to the squad a week later. It seems Robertson’s injury is not as bad as first feared either, with him appearing to be in some distress as he received treatment to his ankle on the Hampden pitch. Liverpool will now hope his ankle pain settles down in the coming days. However, the visit of Brighton on Sunday certainly looks to be too early for his return.
