Banned, teacher so drunk he was given f irst aid on f irst day

- By David Meikle

A TEACHER who was so drunk he required medical attention during an induction day has been banned from the classroom.

Che Yeung downed drinks while attending a course for probationers starting work with Glasgow City Council.

He began consuming alcohol at lunchtime but was later found by other teachers with his head flat on a table.

A woman tried to shake him to wake him up but got no response, so a first aider was contacted.

It was later discovered that Yeung, a physics teacher, had filled a plastic water bottle with gin and taken it to the induction day in August 2022.

Yeung, who has a conviction for drink-driving, was hauled before the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). He accepted he was unfit to teach and consented to having his name taken off the register.

Yeung told the panel he had started drinking during the induction day due to a ‘culmination of pressures’.

He said he felt the content of the course was a repeat of what he had previously been told and was a ‘waste of time’.

Yeung said he could not recall whether he was in possession of a water bottle but accepted finding one in his bag.

He also admitted making false statements to the council and that his actions were dishonest.

Yeung also provided a letter to the GTCS which stated he was ‘remorseful’ for his behaviour and said he believed it was

a result of being ‘isolated’.

Glasgow City Council withdrew its offer of a probationary role following the incident and referred him to the GTCS.

The GTCS said: ‘He admitted or “accepted” the allegations and “accepts that the appropriate outcome in this case is a consent order for removal”.

‘The panel also considered the need to uphold proper teaching standards and the deterrent effect any determination may have on other teachers acting in a similar manner.’
