A place to unwind

Landmark tower now home to luxury flat,

- writes Dean Herbert

FOR years, its ruin stood as an eerie landmark on rail journeys between Edinburgh and Glasgow. But now this former hospital has been given a new lease of life as a block of bright, stylish flats.

For decades, a distinctive clock tower was all that was left standing of the former Woodilee Hospital in the Dunbartonshire town of Lenzie.

However, the grand Victorian facade is now the front for a modern apartment complex. And for £290,000, it would be difficult to find a more distinctive three-bedroom property within commuting distance of Glasgow.

The building began life as the Woodilee Lunatic Pauper Asylum in 1875. By the mid-1980s, the building was beginning to fall apart and the hospital was shut down in 1987.

Developers were able to rescue the clock tower and put the site to good use as a new village.

Gone are any hints of grim Victorian hospital corridors and wards. Much of the building is brand new, in keeping with the modern houses built around it.

Inside the flat is a wide corridor leading to a bright kitchen and living room area.

The public space and kitchen all occupy a fantastic open-plan space with large windows.

The lounge and dining areas are both exceptionally roomy, creating a wonderful space suitable for hosting social occasions not always found in flats. The kitchen is open-plan and has an extensive range of fitted units and integrated appliances.

The property also benefits from a utility room, allowing the likes of the washing machine to be kept out of the way.

There are three double-sized bedrooms, two of which have inbuilt wardrobes. One bedroom also has an en-suite shower room.

A family bathroom completes the internal accommodation.

Estate agent Pacitti Jones said: ‘Enjoying a fine position with the prestigious clock tower building, this fabulous flat by Charles Church has created a truly wonderful property.

‘The property offers particularly spacious accommodation and is finished to a superb standard throughout.’

The flat has allocated parking and outside space in the form of a private residents’ courtyard.

Lenzie railway station, with regular services into Glasgow, is around 20 minutes walk away from the property.

There are also good road links close by, including the recently built Lenzie bypass which allows swift access to the Central Belt motorway system.
