My magnificen­t cars for under £20,000

iF YOU are in the market for a new car, there are plenty of options out there that won’t break the bank. Here are some of my favourites, which all come in under £20,000.

NIFTY JOGGER

LEADiNG the selection is the Dacia Jogger starting at £18,295. The sevenseate­r can even be specified with a special Sleep Pack (bed conversion) costing £1,815 and tent extension, £350.

MIGHTY MG3

CLASSiC British brand MG has carved a niche for valuefor-money motoring. To celebrate its centenary, the now-Chinese owned car maker has launched the MG3 Hybrid+. The SE trim starts from £18,495. Available only as a hybrid, it combines a 1.5 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 3-speed automatic gearbox, accelerati­ng from 0 to 62 mph in 8 seconds.

SPICY PICANTO

THE spicy new third-generation Kia Picanto supermini went on sale this month with all four versions under £20,000. Available to order now ahead of first deliveries from July, they are priced from £15,595 for the entry-level Picanto ‘2’ powered by a 1-litre 62 bhp three-cylinder petrol with 5-speed manual gearbox.

SLEEK SWIFT

THE all-new fourth-generation Suzuki Swift Hybrid is a Cinderella car that should go to the ball. it has just gone on sale with two versions under £20,000 — the best-selling Motion model from £18,699 and the Ultra grade at £19,799. The 1.2-litre Mild Hybrid three-cylinder engine offers CO2 emissions of just 99g/km and combined fuel consumptio­n of 64.2 mpg.

QUIRKY AMI

THE quirky all-electric Citroen AMi is the UK’s cheapest four-wheeled transport, though technicall­y it is not a car.

Officially classed as a ‘light quadricycl­e’, prices start from £7,695 for the entry-level AMi; £8,495 for the funkier AMi POP and £8,695 for the AMi Tonic. it has a 46.6 mile range. However, its 6kW motor restricts top speed to a bone-rattling 28mph.

ZIPPY CORSA

THE multi-award-winning Vauxhall Corsa — one of the UK’s top selling cars — has two variants below £20,000: the Corsa YES

Edition, powered by a 1.2 Turbo 100 hp costs £18,505 and averages 53.3mph. The Design 1.2, 75hp model starts from £19,635 and offers 51.4 mpg.

CUDDLY PANDA

THE cuddly, if boxy, Fiat Panda is a practical propositio­n for urban families who want space in a compact form. riding on 15 in wheels, the five-door, five-seater supermini has three headrests in the rear for maximum comfort. Available in two versions, prices start from £14,740 for the 58.9mpg Fiat Panda 1.0 Mild Hybrid 70 hp.

The rugged top-of-the-range Fiat Panda Cross version starts from £16,240.
