Boyle: I can’t watch Baby Reindeer af ter stalking nightmare

- By Stuart MacDonald

COMEDIAN Frankie Boyle has told how he cannot watch hit show Baby Reindeer after his own torment at the hands of a stalker.

Boyle, 51, said the woman would turn up at his shows and a hotel he was staying in.

In 2018, a 48-year-old woman was ordered to stay away from Boyle for three years after being accused of stalking him over an eight-month period. Court papers stated she also loitered in places where she knew Boyle would be, and stared at him.

Glasgow-born Boyle spoke publicly about the case for the first time on his podcast Here Comes The Guillotine.

He said: ‘I had a stalker in quite a similar situation to that guy [in Baby Reindeer] and I just can’t watch the show.

‘I remember doing a gig and... in the front row she was there in a really crumpled evening gown and she was furious. She was very much focused on living under a tree outside my house for quite some length of time.

‘She went into this hotel I was staying at during the Edinburgh Festival. She kept turning up and I was like, “How is she finding me when I’m in this hotel?”

‘The police said to me, “We found she had created a kind of nest in the disabled toilet of that hotel”. She had got, like, a duvet in and she had slept in there.’

When she appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, the woman was ordered to be detained under the Mental Health Act for six months, and handed a threeyear non-harassment order barring her from contacting Boyle.

Baby Reindeer depicts the story of a stalker who allegedly harassed Scottish comedian Richard Gadd. Fiona Harvey, said to be the real-life inspiration for the drama’s stalker Martha, has threatened to sue Netflix over the series.
