Oakwrights Scotland

Piperstone House is an example of how to create a truly stunning home that takes advantage of its beautiful location in the Ayrshire countryside. The Oakwrights Scotland team were pivotal throughout Graeme and Joyce’s self-build process, to the extent that Business Development Manager Iain Hendry secured the building plot from his extensive contacts in the Ayrshire land and property marketplace. Then the initial design, planning, specification and ultimately the build itself were all project-managed and coordinated by Iain and the team.

With the perfect location secured, the design brief was set: achieve a naturally light, bright home with green oak features that would maximise the panoramic views available. Oakwrights Scotland’s attitude is best captured in Graeme’s words: ‘Iain took on our brief and ensured it was followed through to the nth degree! ‘

Piperston House has some real character about it, with the green oak frame working alongside natural stone and slate, cedar lining, render and glass to bring this home to life. The beautiful oak brings real life and character to the fully vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom and the exposed character beams and joists in the lounge. In addition to these focal points of the living home is the ‘chill out’ sunroom, with its panoramic views over the Ayrshire countryside.

Graeme and Joyce both commented on the ease of the build process with Oakwrights Scotland, saying: ‘ Having extended and renovated our previous home and having an eye for detail, we knew exactly what we wanted. Iain and the team delivered beyond all our expectations! ‘

In today’s age of renewable energy, Piperston House ticks all the boxes: an air source heat pump, underfloor heating over two floors, solar thermal generating hot water, solar PV generating electricity and heat recovery ventilation. All these features combined have led to Piperston House gaining an energy efficiency A rating.

Graeme says: ‘It was really important for both Joyce and I to minimise our running costs for the future, hence our quality build and the renewable features. We have truly personalised our home, choosing our kitchen, bathrooms, tiles and flooring ourselves, meaning it is ‘our house’, not one off the shelf! ‘

The couple both have their own favourite spaces in Piperston. For Joyce it is the open plan kitchen, dining and family area with the stove, bifold doors and green oak sunroom – ‘exactly how we imagined and more! ‘ For Graeme it is the fully vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom with the oak truss – ‘just fantastic! ‘

So delighted were Graeme and Joyce with their build that they opened it up for Oakwrights to host an open weekend in November. Iain Hendry is keen to impress on prospective self-builders the importance of these opportunities, as it gives the freedom to see the superiority of finish and to feel the excellence of the quality available.

Graeme states: ‘ We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Iain and the Oakwrights team to design and procure a new Green Oak home. Both Joyce and I really are delighted! ‘
