GREAT GARDENS TO VISIT THIS MONTH
Stobo Japanese Water Garden, Stobo, Peeblesshire
June and October are the best months to visit this secluded woodland garden. While water is probably the main feature of the garden now, the layout echoes facets of a more conventional Japanese garden – stepping stones, humpback bridges, azaleas, acers , rhododendrons, and other specialist trees and shrubs. Several Japanese lanterns and a tea house still remain from the original design, which was completed in the early years of the last century. Open 7 June (1.30pm-5pm)
Dunesslin, Dunscore, Dumfriesshire
Set in the hills with good views, the principal garden consists of a series of connecting rooms filled with herbaceous plants. There is a substantial rock garden with alpines and unusual plants, and a hill walk to view three cairns by Andy Goldsworthy. Open 14 June (2pm-5pm)
The Quoy of Houton, Orphir, Orkney
An historic walled garden situated a stone’s throw from the sea and completely restored in 2008. The garden is planted to withstand winds in excess of 100 mph and features drystone walling features, raised beds and a 60-foot water rill. The planting reflects its coastal location, with towering allium, many varieties of geranium and plants collected from around Europe. Designed in a cottage garden style, there are also wild flower areas to encourage bees and butterflies. There is a separate walled vegetable garden and fruit cage, which supplies the house and B&B and cottage guests. A new walled garden is planned for this year. Open 21 June (11am-5pm)
