TRIED & TESTED
WHAT IS IT: It’s Swedteam’s Anorak Titan Pro Gore-Tex jacket. £359 from www. teamwildoutfitters.com I WANT IT BECAUSE: It’s wind and rainproof, and it’s back is 20cm longer than usual, so sitting down is no longer a soggy experience. USEFUL FOR: Shooting and stalking in freezing conditions. HIGH POINT: It has several nice details: adjustable neoprene cuffs, drawstring waits, built-in hood, and a large binocular pocket with closed zip to keep your hands warm. It also has a six-year warranty. LOW POINT: As with all smocks, it’s difficult to let the air in, so if the weather (or you) gets hotter than expected, it’s tough to control the temperature adequtely.
WHAT IS IT: A pair of Terra Nova Trail Lite walking sticks. £45 from www.terranova.co.uk I WANT IT BECAUSE: These aluminium alloy poles are widely rated as the best buy under £50 and are better than many more expensive poles. The three sections are easy to adjust depending on your height, and will easily fit in a rucksack. USEFUL FOR: Walking. I’ve foolishly undertaken to do the Caledonian Challenge this summer and hopefully these poles will save my knees. They are also lightweight and stowable. HIGH POINT: The soft grips are comfortable and durable, and the soft neoprene straps are big enough to be used with thick mitts or gloves. The clips are chunky enough to be easily adjusted even while wearing mittens or gloves.
LOW POINT: None.
